Tim Allen‘s return to a past character was not what he anticipated. ET’s Lauren Zima spoke with Allen and his “Last Man Standing” co-star, Nancy Travis, forward of the ninth and closing period premiere of their Fox sitcom.

Throughout the chat, Allen opened up about participating in the two his current role and a past function — Tim Taylor of “Home Improvement” — on an future episode of “Last Man Standing”, an encounter the 67-calendar year-previous actor identified as “weird, creepy… [and] uncommon.”

“It was really peculiar to do both of those sections, I’ll inform you that. It was hard for me to do both pieces and form of psychological,” Allen admitted, revealing that his emotions arrived, in significant element, due to the fact of Earl Hindman’s 2003 demise. Allen and Hindman co-starred on “Home Improvement” from 1991 to 1999, with the later actor enjoying Wilson, Allen’s onscreen neighbor.

“I adored the gentleman and we variety of introduced that up in the tale,” Allen stated. “I started contemplating about all the background I had with that Television clearly show, how I look at it to my everyday living on this present. It’s all about reduction, is all I stored expressing in that episode.”

Apart from the emotion bordering the demise of his co-star, Allen located the practical experience of taking part in both equally Tim Taylor and Mike Baxter “very difficult” for other motives as properly.

“Taylor misplaced his Television set demonstrate. Tool Time is around. He experienced a neighbour that passed away. He’s now working on the corporate aspect of Binford Instruments. Which is what he does,” Allen defined. “Baxter’s supporting Tim Taylor cope with change… They are not pleasant to each other. They’re form of antagonistic.”

Even though psychological and complicated, Allen praised the episode as becoming “a good idea” that introduced Tim Taylor “into this century, into this year.”

“It’s truly intelligent what they did with it,” he said of the show’s writers.

Fans of the present took to Twitter and shared their pleasure for the one of a kind episode.

While Allen was tight-lipped about the particulars of his dual job, he did give enthusiasts a hint of what to count on when “Last Person Standing” returns for its ninth and ultimate season.

“By the time this airs… it will have been virtually as the vaccine can take hold. We’re sort of not by it, but the mild is vibrant at the conclusion of the tunnel,” he stated of the pandemic’s part in the year. “We reference it. We try to remember the pandemic. It is applied, but it’s as while our masks experienced just appear off.”

The ninth and last period of “Last Man Standing” airs Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
