“Household Enhancement” experienced a top quality that all sitcoms strive for: chemistry amongst leads Tim Allen and Richard Karn.

Allen, now 67, and Karn, now 65, starred with each other in the strike comedy collection for eight seasons from 1991-1999. They performed Tim Taylor and Al Borland, respectively — hosts of the fictional television collection “Tool Time.”

Now, the pair are reuniting for a new actuality series, “Assembly Required,” for the Heritage Channel, which will see them oversee contestants fixing up and refurbishing everyday home products.

At the show’s TCA panel on Thursday, the co-stars mirrored on their on-monitor chemistry.


“When we commenced performing ‘Home Enhancement,’ we had audiences viewing ‘Tool Time’ that hadn’t viewed the present at all,” Kern recalled. “Our romance kind of took place before we knew what it was. We took our cues from audience reactions to us, but we did not know there was just about anything actually remarkable about how we ended up participating in off each and every other.”

The actor added that he and Allen had been simply doing their career, but “the writers had been able to observe that and lean into it and publish for it.”

Kern also recalled Allen after admitting that he’d “hardly ever be close friends with Al” early in their time doing work together.
