Alder Commons: An Uncommon Project

Staying house builders, we at Hammer & Hand spend a ton of our time doing remodels, new residences, and the occasional business TI in Portland and Seattle. However we pleasure ourselves on getting top-notch builders and fantastic members of our communities, it is not usually that we get to be involved in a task that is designed all over the notion of group making alone. Operating on the Alder Commons neighborhood kitchen area construct-out was a unusual take care of for us, and a single that meant a ton to numerous customers of our staff.

For the uninitiated, Alder Commons is a nonprofit house intended to facilitate multigenerational, multicultural local community setting up and own progress. They provide a area for self-directed learning in courses and workshops on a large assortment of matters and for a varied array of peoples. From cooking courses to bookshelf building, art classes to homeschool hangouts for children in the LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities, Alder Commons serves as a community crossroad for intersectional cultural appreciation and self-enhancement.

Our mission is to cultivate an equitable, all-ages local community of self-directed learners. We goal to lower obstacles among youth and grownups of varied backgrounds by delivering an available and inclusive house for them to share know-how and sources.” (supply: Alder Commons | Philosophy)

When the Alder Commons team approached Hammer & Hand about building their community kitchen area house, we have been thrilled for the possibility to provide their dream to lifestyle. The challenge was designed by Communitecture, a regional architecture agency with an eye for imaginative local community areas and a mission for social justice. As conventional builders with a emphasis in both of those design and style-pushed initiatives and progressing diversity, fairness, and inclusion in just our very own field, it was a perfect suit for Hammer & Hand. We express our heartfelt gratitude to Alder Commons for deciding on Hammer & Hand to create a area that is now a commissary kitchen area serving as dwelling foundation for 16 little, greater part-QTBIPOC foods and herbalism organizations.
